Rusty-cheeked Hornbill

This fairly small brown bird is a shy forest-dwelling species; it is usually seen in the lower or middle levels of the forest interior. Most similar to foliage-gleaners, which can be very similar in plumage. Look for the woodhaunter’s blurry buffy streaking on the head and breast, rather long straight bill, and lack of a pale eyebrow. Does not climb up tree trunks like a woodcreeper, but forages by hopping around tangles, mosses, and vines, rummaging around looking for invertebrates. Most often seen singly or in pairs, sometimes accompanying mixed-species flocks. Listen for series of hard nasal chips, and grating scold calls. Occurs from eastern Nicaragua to western Ecuador.

Small toucan of rainforest canopy that is most often seen at fruiting trees at forest edge. Smaller than an aracari and tends not to occur in large groups. Sexes dissimilar, unlike other toucans in range; from below, note mostly black (male) or dark gray (female) plumage and colorful facial pattern. Reaches from a perch to pluck fruit similar to other toucans. Calls include croaking and wailing sounds which may not initially be recognized as coming from a bird.

Small, rather dark kingfisher. Male is highly distinctive, with a broad blue-green band across a white chest. Female is very different, with no band and all-orange belly. Female similar to Common Kingfisher but overall duller, darker coloration; lacks the orange patch behind the eye and has a red base to the bill. Female also similar to Blue-eared Kingfisher but lacks the bright blue color. Hunts along fast-flowing forested streams from lowlands into foothills. Gives a piercing call similar to that of Common Kingfisher.
