Peruvian Tyrannulet
Zimmerius viridiflavus
Small flycatcher found in forest canopy in the Andes from southwestern Ecuador to central Peru. It is grayish-green with yellow on the face and throat, a broken eye-ring, and yellowish fringes to the wing feathers. Almost identical in plumage to Choco Tyrannulet and Golden-faced Tyrannulet, but note their distinct geographical ranges. In areas where their ranges potentially meet, voice must be used to clinch the identification. Peruvian Tyrannulet frequently gives a ringing “su-WEET” or “su-wu-WEET.” Actively chases insects in the canopy, often cocking its tail up.

Rusty Tinamou
Crypturellus brevirostris
Small tinamou, barred cinnamon and black above, rusty below, with a pale belly. Found mostly in seasonally flooded forest, but also recorded in upland forest, where it forages on the ground. The song is a series of musical whistles, starting slowly and accelerating towards the end.

Golden Tanager
Tangara arthus
Small tanager found in Andean foothills and subtropical zone from Venezuela to Bolivia. Mostly bright golden-yellow with isolated black ear patch, streaked back, and mostly black wings and tail. Some variation among populations, with northernmost birds showing a chestnut breast band and flanks. Sexes alike; young birds duller yellow. One of the most common tanagers in mixed flocks from around 900–2,200 m, in cloud forest, edges, and gardens.

Goliath Heron
Ardea goliath
This enormous heron stands 1.5 meters tall and has a robust, dagger-like bill. The immature has rustier upperwings than the adult. Its flight is ponderous and labored. Goliath Heron inhabits large rivers, marshes, estuaries, and mangroves, hunting for large fish and other animals, stabbing them with an open bill. It has a distinct, barking “kowoork” call that can be heard from up to 2 km away. Purple Heron has similar plumage, but Goliath Heron is twice the size, has a much larger bill, and has a rufous (not blackish) top of the head.
