Yellow-bellied Whistler

Medium-sized marsh bird, plump and chickenlike. Slaty gray below and brown above. Note bright red legs and long greenish-yellow bill. Most similar to Plumbeous Rail but lacks red on base of bill. Found in marshy habitats including pastures and rice fields. Secretive but sometimes seen feeding at the edge of dense grasses; flicks tail when it walks. More often heard than seen: listen for loud, grating squeals.

An attractive small toucan of tropical lowland forest and edge. Usually found in small groups moving through the canopy of fruiting trees or seen flying, one at a time, across clearings and between trees. Flight rather direct and fast, when long-tailed and long-billed shape is distinctive. Note the yellow body with red and black markings, and the serrated pattern on the big bill.

This exquisite nuthatch can only be found in a tiny portion of Myanmar’s southern Chin Hills. The gray-white-and-rust color scheme of this species is unmistakable. Occurs in oak-rhododendron forests at approximately 2300–2750 meters. Like other nuthatches, feeds actively along branches, typically singly or in pairs. Gives a bubbling trill and cheeps insistently.
