Kerguelen Petrel

Aphrodroma brevirostris

Dark ash-gray petrel of cold southern seas. Small- and stout-bodied overall, but with a large, “puffy”-looking head. Note underwing patterning, with a pale “shoulder” separated from pale-based primaries by a broad, diffuse dark bar. Flies quickly and strongly, often arcing up to impressive heights above the waves on angled, sharply kinked wings. Can be difficult to distinguish from other dark medium-sized petrels at a distance, but note pale patches under the wings, overall gray body coloration, relatively large “cute” head, and flight style. Often forages at night. Nests in loose colonies on the Prince Edward, Crozet, and Kerguelen Islands, as well as Gough Island.

分类信息

The Kerguelen petrel was formally described in 1831 by the French naturalist René Lesson. He placed it in the genus Procellaria that had been erected for the petrels by Carl Linnaeus in 1758 and coined the binomial name Procellaria brevirostris. The Kerguelen petrel was formerly included with the gadfly petrels in the genus Pterodroma but is now placed in the genus Aphrodroma that was introduced for the Kerguelen petrel by Storrs L. Olson in 2000. The name Aphrodroma combines the Ancient Greek aphros meaning "sea foam" with -dromos meaning "-racer".The specific epithet brevirostris is from the Latin brevis meaning "short" and -rostris meaning "-billed". The species is monotypic: no subspecies are recognised.

Sjöstedt's Greenbul

Sjöstedt's Greenbul

Baeopogon clamans

A unusual dark greenbul often found near water in the forest interior. Decorated in various shades of dark and olive green, with a gray throat that contrasts with the breast, a buffy belly, and bright white sides of the tail. Can be confused with both Honeyguide Greenbul and actual honeyguides, but the flight is direct rather than undulating, the throat contrasts with the breast, the eyes are always dark, and the vocalizations are distinctive. Can be located by its “REHR!” calls, often followed by a series of fast, scratchy notes and sometimes repeated for minutes on end.

Mishana Tyrannulet

Mishana Tyrannulet

Zimmerius villarejoi

Uncommon flycatcher with a highly restricted range in northern Peru. It is known from white sand forest near Iquitos and from Andean foothills in the vicinity of the cities of Moyobamba and Tarapoto. Plumage is mostly yellowish-olive with a pale bill and eye and yellow fringes to the wing feathers. Very similar to Red-billed Tyrannulet, but usually shows an olive (not gray) crown; voice is a more reliable way to separate the two species. Listen for a high, piping whistle given alone or in pairs. Calls have a rasping quality in the lowland part of the range. Inhabits forest canopy.

Crimson-collared Grosbeak

Crimson-collared Grosbeak

Periporphyrus celaeno

Stocky and often rather sluggish bird of tropical forest and edge in lowlands and foothills of northeast Mexico. Usually found as singles or pairs, feeding quietly at all levels in fruiting trees or bushes. Note the thick stubby bill and rather long tail. Adult male is striking: dark overall with a black hood and broad pinkish-red collar. Female is drab greenish overall with black hood similar to male. Immature is like female but with less extensive black hood.
