Vanuatu Megapode
Megapodius layardi
A large-bodied, small-headed, long-legged, mostly ground-dwelling bird. Easily identified by long bright yellowish legs, bright red face, entirely black round body, and bright orange bill. No similar birds inhabit Vanuatu. More inconspicuous than other scrubfowl, often sitting motionless in trees, but can be surprisingly tolerant of humans around settlements. Very vocal, especially at dawn and dusk, giving a loud far-carrying chuckling and chicken-like clucking, “toook took-tooor” repeated.

Two syntype specimens of Megapodius layardi Tristram (Ibis, 1879, p. 194.) are held in the collections of National Museums Liverpool at World Museum, with accession numbers T9758 (male adult) and T9759 (female adult). The specimens were collected in Vate Island (Efate) in July 1877 and September 1877, respectively, by Edgar Leopold Layard and came to the Liverpool national collection via Canon Henry Baker Tristram's collection which was purchased in 1896. There are three further syntypes in the bird collection at the Natural History Museum at Tring.

Chinchipe Spinetail
Synallaxis chinchipensis
Handsome spinetail restricted to the Marañon Valley in northwestern Peru. Note spotted breast sides, indistinct pale eyebrow, and chestnut wings and tail. Pairs stay fairly low in deciduous forest and scrub, often skulky and difficult to see. Listen for fast sputtering trills.
Piping Crow
Corvus typicus
A distinctive black-and-white crow that occurs within the canopy of hill and mountain forest on Sulawesi and satellite islands. White parts of adults are duller on juveniles. Typically found in pairs or small groups. Gives a variety of conspicuous loud calls, including screeches, metallic whistles, and piping notes, very unlike traditional crow sounds.
Togian Golden-Bulbul
Hypsipetes aureus
A thrush-sized songbird with a long powerful bill, an olive head and upperparts, a dark eye, and uniform yellow underparts. Juveniles duller and pale-eyed. Occurs in forest and plantations within the lowlands and foothills, typically in small groups. Restricted to the Togian Islands. Larger-bodied and heavier-billed than Citrine Canary-Flycatcher and Golden-bellied Gerygone. Gregarious and noisy, with loud vocalizations consisting of a complex combination of whistles, rasping calls, and warbles, often introduced with “chup” nasal notes.
