Legge's Hawk-Eagle

Nisaetus kelaarti

Rather large, slim hawk-eagle with a white-tipped crest, streaked gray cheeks, and long feathered legs. It has strongly barred broad wings and a long tail. Unlike the otherwise very similar Crested Hawk-Eagle, the streaking on Legge’s is restricted to the upper breast, and its breast, belly, and thighs are strongly barred. Has an upright stance when seen perched in the canopy of forested hills.

Spotted Redshank

Spotted Redshank

Tringa erythropus

Elegant wader with a long fine bill and long reddish legs (dark on breeding adults). Striking breeding plumage dark overall. Nonbreeding plumage is paler and grayer than smaller and chunkier Common Redshank. In flight often appears dark overall with narrow white oval up middle of back. Breeds in arctic bogs and swamps; migrants occur in varied wetland habitats. Usually seen as singles or small groups, though will sometimes congregate in large flocks, especially on wintering grounds. Feeds mainly by wading in fairly deep water, probing and picking with its bill, at times swimming.

Sickle-winged Nightjar

Sickle-winged Nightjar

Eleothreptus anomalus

While perched, appears to be an unassuming nightjar: rather small, short-tailed, and largely gray with dark brown spots. In flight, males are spectacular, with unique flight feathers forming the “sickle” wing shape. Females lack these modified wing feathers. Usually found close to water, around gallery forest; in some areas also in grassland and marshes. The call is a repetition of very subtle “chip” notes.

Common Nightingale

Common Nightingale

Luscinia megarhynchos

A plain brown bird with a pale eyering and rusty-brown tail, best known for its rich, powerful song which can keep people awake when given at night. In areas of overlap, compare with extremely similar Thrush Nightingale; note present species’ unmarked pale underparts, often with a variable buffy wash, as well as its warmer-toned back and brighter rufous tail. Song is extremely variable, and can include whistles, trills, rattles, and warbled phrases; elements often repeated. Calls include a very difficult-to-locate “teek”, low rattles, and harsh rasping calls. Found in varied wooded and scrubby habitats, typically with shady understory. Winters in similarly varied tangled habitats. Typically rather shy and elusive.
