Black-necked Stilt
Himantopus mexicanus
Elegant shorebird with exceptionally long, bright pink legs. Distinctive black-and-white plumage and thin black bill. Male is glossier black above, female is slightly browner. Some variation across range: darker neck in Hawaii; whiter crown and more extensive white collar in southern South America. Widespread and fairly common throughout the Americas, although rare or absent from much of the eastern U.S. Usually seen in pairs or small flocks, foraging in shallow ponds or marshes.

The black-necked stilt (Himantopus mexicanus), also called the pied stilt, is a locally abundant shorebird of North and South American wetlands and coastlines. It is found from the coastal areas of California through much of the interior western United States and along the Gulf of Mexico as far east as Florida, then south through Central America and the Caribbean to Brazil, Peru and the Galápagos Islands, with an isolated population, the Hawaiian stilt, in Hawaii. The northernmost populations, particularly those from inland, are migratory, wintering from the extreme south of the United States to southern Mexico, rarely as far south as Costa Rica; on the Baja California peninsula it is only found regularly in winter. Some authorities, including the IUCN, treat it as a synonym of Himantopus himantopus.

Giant Kingbird
Tyrannus cubensis
A large flycatcher typically found singly or in pairs hunting from upper branches in wooded areas. It is grayish above and whitish below with a blackish crown and face, which resembles Eastern, Gray and Loggerhead Kingbirds, but none have the truly massive bill of the Giant Kingbird. Eastern Kingbird can also be separated by its bold white tail band, which is absent on Giant Kingbird. Gray Kingbird has a paler head with a dusky mask unlike Giant Kingbird. Loggerhead Kingbird has a gray tail band and its tail is typically squared off whereas the tail is usually notched in Giant. Calls include a squeaky “trrp-bee-bee-bip,” a shrill “trrree-bip,” and various peeps and chatters.
Pale-faced Bulbul
Pycnonotus leucops
Endemic to Borneo’s montane highlands, this brownish-olive bulbul, with its white face and large, dark eyes, is distinctive. Forages in fruiting trees, as well as low, scrubby growth lining the rocky peaks of the highest mountains. Listen for low, churred calls, given repeatedly or strung into slightly up-and-down song. Formerly treated as a subspecies of Flavescent Bulbul, which has a darker face and does not occur on Borneo.
Chinese Thrush
Turdus mupinensis
Medium-sized, stout thrush, brown above, white below, with a black-spotted underparts and dark crescent behind the ear coverts. Large-eyed appearance enhanced by a prominent white eyering and round head. Very similar in appearance to the Song Thrush of Europe. Inhabits mixed forests and generally avoids gardens and small parks. Song is multi-phrased and mellow, with many slurred notes.
