Bahama Warbler
Setophaga flavescens
This charming species is fond of pine woods where it is often found creeping along branches and trunks in a manner similar to that of the Black-and-white Warbler. Also visits flowers. The very similar Yellow-throated Warbler has less extensive yellow on both belly and face as well as a thicker eyeline, more distinctive white patch behind the cheek, and shorter bill. Song is a sweet “chutty, chutty, chutty, swee, swee, tsoo, tsoo.” Call is a single high “chip” or “tsit” like that of a Yellow-throated Warbler.

The taxon was formerly lumped with the yellow-throated warbler (Setophaga dominica), until the Bahama warbler was elevated to full species in 2011, on the distinctions of that the Bahama warbler is restricted to pinewoods, possesses a longer bill, and has small variations in plumage color.

The Bahama warbler forages amidst pine needles in the higher branches of pine forests, occasionally descending to forage in the shrubs of the understory. It also uses its long bill to probe under the bark of tree trunks in search of insects. No other warblers in the region feed along trunks as extensively as the Bahama warbler.

Red-necked Buzzard
Buteo auguralis
This is the common buzzard of much of the Sahel in north, west, and central Africa. Typically has a brown back, a dark chest, a black-spotted white belly, and a rufous tail. Can variably show rufous on the neck and breast. Dark brown immatures lack rufous on the tail. In flight, shows a white underwing with a thick black border. Found in savanna, broadleaf woodland, and forest clearings. Similar to Common Buzzard, but separated by the contrasting underparts: a dark chest and a white belly. The call is a drawn-out squeal.

Widespread and abundant in cities, neighborhoods and farms. Avoids dense woods. Flocks cluster in dense bushes, bustling around and chattering to one another. Males have smart black bibs, bright rufous napes, and stunningly patterned wings with brilliant buffs and browns. Underparts are pale pearly-gray. Females are plain brown with cute face and lighter eyebrow. Native to Eurasia; introduced to much of the rest of the world.
Black Hawk-Eagle

Uncommon, spectacular, crested eagle of lowland tropical forest. Most frequently seen soaring in mid-late morning; rarely seen perched. Gives loud, far-carrying whistles while flying, which often indicate its presence. Adult is black overall with bold white checkering under the wings and bold white bands on the tail. Immatures, although rarely seen, are browner with a white throat and crown. The short bushy crest is usually apparent only on perched birds and is not seen in flight.
