Temminck's Courser
Cursorius temminckii
Elegant, long-legged, upland shorebird. Note the rufous crown and black patch on the belly. Shows a completely black wing in flight. Found in very open areas such as short grassland, semi-desert, and overgrazed and recently burned areas. Usually seen in pairs or family groups. Like all coursers, ducks the head and runs across the ground at great speed. Call is a mournful, off-key, up-and-down series. All-rufous crown, black belly patch, and all-black wing are not shown by the area’s other coursers.

Temminck's courser (Cursorius temminckii) is a bird in the pratincole and courser family, Glareolidae. It is a wader which lives in sub-Saharan Africa. It is noted for laying its dark ash-black eggs in the burnt bushes and grass of the African savannah.

Andean Pygmy-Owl
Glaucidium jardinii
Very small owl of the upper subtropics and temperate forest. Typical pygmy-owl plumage: mostly brown or rufous above, white below with messy brown stripes, and small whitish spots on crown. Sexes similar. Found at higher elevations than other pygmy-owls, mostly from 2,500–3,500 m. Usually seen in the daytime perched at middle or upper levels of forest, often being mobbed by hummingbirds or small passerines. Typically detected by song, which can be given at any time of day but mainly early and late: a series of whistled toots, sometimes with a few quavering notes at the beginning.

A small flycatcher of forested habitats on Hawaii Island. Adults have white wingbars, rump, and tail tips. More common and widespread in native forest at higher elevations, but occurs at lower elevations in some areas where forest remains. Bold and curious; not afraid of people and may follow hikers. Often holds tail cocked up at an angle. Male song is a shrill “El-eh-pie-oh” for which the species is named. Both sexes give a variety of calls and scolding notes. May respond to pishing and squeaking.

Brown babbler with a black throat and scale-like white feathers on the brow and neck. Favors slopes of lowland and foothill forests. Forages just above or on the ground; frequently in mixed flocks with other similarly-sized babblers. Song is a short series of mellow and beautiful melodic whistles.
