Hainan Leaf Warbler

A medium-sized bird of mid-montane forest understory. Sooty gray color, paler on the belly, darker on the face and wing. Note the pale eye and white throat contrasting with the dark face. Birds on the Huon Peninsular have a gray throat. Perches on low branches, flicking tail and scanning the ground for insect prey. Smoky and Blue-gray Robins have limited altitudinal overlap, but White-eyed is usually found at lower elevations, has a white eye and usually a white throat. Voice, a loud, upslurred whistle “wit!”. Also, a rising series of notes, first whistled then becoming raspier and accelerating.

Medium-sized antpitta. Typical antpitta shape: plump and short-tailed with long legs, like a grapefruit on stilts. Plain brownish overall; darker olive above and tawny below with a white eyering. Uncommon in the foothills and lower subtropics from Venezuela to Peru. Occurs on the ground in wet montane forest from around 700–1,800 m. Exceptionally difficult to see. Listen for its song: a fairly slow series of hollow whistles that gets stronger in the middle and then trails off.

Small hummingbird with limited range. Male entirely glittering green with dark forked tail. Bill is straight and all black. Does not have coppery rump like Steely-vented Hummingbird. Female is clean white below with distinctive black cheek and white line behind eye. Nearly identical to Canivet’s Emerald but no range overlap. Found in second-growth, gardens, and forest edge.
