White-eyed Robin
Pachycephalopsis poliosoma
A medium-sized bird of mid-montane forest understory. Sooty gray color, paler on the belly, darker on the face and wing. Note the pale eye and white throat contrasting with the dark face. Birds on the Huon Peninsular have a gray throat. Perches on low branches, flicking tail and scanning the ground for insect prey. Smoky and Blue-gray Robins have limited altitudinal overlap, but White-eyed is usually found at lower elevations, has a white eye and usually a white throat. Voice, a loud, upslurred whistle “wit!”. Also, a rising series of notes, first whistled then becoming raspier and accelerating.

Yapacana Antbird
Aprositornis disjuncta
Odd, slender antbird with a rather long bill. Males are gray above and white below with white spots on the wings; females have rusty underparts and lack wing spots. Found across a restricted range in the understory of stunted campina forests. Does not generally associate with mixed-species flocks, but may sometimes attend army-ant swarms. The song is a series of harsh notes with short “pips” in between: “grrrrrrr-pipip-grrrrrrrr-pip.”

Diamond Dove
Geopelia cuneata
Tiny gray dove with a plain neck and chest, and an obvious red eyering. This species has tiny pale spots on folded wings. The tail is quite dark, long and pointed (much longer tail than the similar Peaceful Dove). More common inland and in northern Australia, where it can be abundant in arid grassland areas.

Bufflehead
Bucephala albeola
Small, compact diving duck with large head and small gray bill. Breeding males are black and white with large white patch on back of head. Females and immature males are gray-brown with white patch on cheek. Much smaller than Common Goldeneye with which it often associates. Found in bays, estuaries, reservoirs, and lakes in winter. Travels to boreal forest and nests in cavities in summer.
