Hainan Partridge
Arborophila ardens
Small game bird restricted to the tropical rainforests of southern Hainan Island, where it is the only forest-dwelling partridge. Body is brown above and gray below; head is black with a bright white ear patch and an orange collar. Unlikely to be confused with the only other game bird in its habitat, the Hainan Peacock Pheasant, which is far larger and gray all over. Shy and far more often heard than seen; ringing song is often heard at dawn.

Rufous-necked Laughingthrush
Pterorhinus ruficollis
This laughingthrush’s color palette is simple but smooth and unique: dark gray overall with a black face and pumpkin-orange neck and vent. Favors forest edge and scrubby habitat more than most other laughingthrushes in its range; also often found along rivers and in reedbeds. Forages on or near the ground; flocks in the non-breeding season. Gives loud whistles and burbling phrases, as well as harsh chattering and rasping notes.

Yellow-vented Myzomela
Myzomela eichhorni
A small, mostly black bird with a decurved bill, a red throat patch, and a bright red rump. Tail black. Female similar, but duller brownish below. Found in any habitat with trees or shrubs. The only myzomela in its limited range. Voice is a loud, high-pitched “tseep-tseep.”
