Perija Brushfinch

Tiny, short-tailed hummingbird with disjunct range from Venezuela to southeast Ecuador. Spectacular male is mostly green with a bushy orange crest with black spots, a dark throat, a red bill, and a white band across rump. Female is duller overall with a rusty forehead and a whitish throat. Unlikely to be confused within its range, but compare with Rufous-crested Coquette (male lacks black spotting in crest and female has a brighter rusty throat). Generally rare in lowlands and foothills up to around 1,200 m. Most likely to be seen at purple Verbena flowers or in the canopy of a flowering Inga tree.

Small scrubwren with white eyebrow and pale iris. Has a dark face with a clear white eyebrow and chin stripe. Primarily olive-brown with a black-and-white shoulder patch and paler front. Chin is white with varying levels of black streaking depending on the location. This species is widespread across eastern coastal Australia, but is absent in the northern areas. Western edge of its expected distribution is the Mt Lofty Ranges east of Adelaide. Found in a wide range of habitats but typically only present where there is reasonably thick undergrowth. It often makes a grumpy buzzing call but also sings a clear musical song.

A rare and declining medium-sized bunting that is found only in shrubby, sandy areas between steppelands and deciduous woodlands. Both sexes have a simple yet elegant head pattern that somewhat resembles that of Meadow Bunting, but Rufous-backed Bunting is considerably paler with a gray instead of dark brown-black cheek patch. Male is warm rufous-brown above and has a unique dark patch on the belly. Females are similarly colored, but are overall a colder brown and have a spotty necklace across the breast instead of a belly patch.
