Seram Myzomela

Endemic resident of shady subtropical broadleaf forest understorey on the main island of Okinawa. Forages on the ground and often seen at the forest edge. Rufous-orange upperparts with grayish-white belly. Male has a black face and chest. Similar to the migratory Ryukyu Robin but male lacks the blackish flank patches and black forehead of that species. Female lacks black spotting on the chest of female Ryukyu Robin. Song is an up-and-down whistled melody. Call is a dry rattle, accompanied by wing and tail flicks.

Restricted to São Miguel Island in the Azores; found in steep-sided valleys in laurel forests. Medium-large, plump finch with a strong, deep bill and short, rounded wings. Both sexes resembles a female Eurasian Bullfinch, with a black crown, face, and neck, but Azores are dark brown above and light brown below unlike the reddish-orange bellied male Eurasian Bullfinch. Tail and wings are largely black albeit with a white bar. The call is a soft melancholic “phew.”

Very small, rather insectlike hummingbird found locally in foothills and highlands; uncommon. Occurs mainly in shrubby areas with flower banks, within areas of open woodland and forest. When feeding at flowers, flies slowly and methodically, like a big bee, often with the tail held cocked. Best field mark is the big white rump patches, which contribute to the beelike aspect. Male has long, forked tail (usually closed in a point) with white bands. Female is rather plain but is distinctly buffy below.
