Seram Myzomela

Myzomela blasii

A small, drab brown songbird with an entirely blackish downcurved bill and subtle scaling on the throat. Restricted to Seram, Boano, and Ambon islands. A canopy-dweller in forest and forest edge in foothills and mountains, where it gathers in small flocks within flowering trees. Distinguished from Wakolo Myzomela by absence of red on face and by indistinct throat scaling. Differs from Seram Honeyeater in smaller size, all-dark bill, lack of heavy breast streaking and lack of pale cheek mark. Gives high-pitched “sis, sis, sis…” calls and chattering notes.

Montezuma Quail

Montezuma Quail

Cyrtonyx montezumae

A remarkably patterned quail, uncommon and difficult to spot as it runs through open grassy woodlands in dry regions of the southwest U.S. and Mexico. Male looks like he’s are wearing a black-and-white helmet; otherwise look for bold spots and streaks covering body and wings. Female is more subtly patterned with shades of brown; look for rounded, puffy head shape. Between bursts of running, often crouches motionless and becomes nearly invisible. Rarely flies unless flushed at very close range; most often seen crossing a road or trail. Male song is a rich descending whistle with unique ethereal tone like an incoming spaceship.

Pere David's Laughingthrush

Pere David's Laughingthrush

Pterorhinus davidi

A plain clay-brown laughingthrush with a long, curved yellow bill. Largely without distinguishing plumage features, but note weak white brow, blue-gray tinge to the wings, and small black patches on the “elbow” and face. The only laughingthrush in much of its range. Forages in hilly and montane regions, where it often moves about noisily in medium-sized flocks in scrubby, brushy habitat, often near waterways. Long rambling song melodious and thrush-like; calls include fluid whistles, nasal chattering, and quiet peeping.

White-throated Laughingthrush

White-throated Laughingthrush

Pterorhinus albogularis

Warm brown with an ochre-colored belly and pure white throat, this laughingthrush is found in foothill forests along the Himalayas and in central China. Several other laughingthrushes also have pale throats, but none are as plain and unmarked above as White-throated. Gives high whistles, often from within cover. Common in foothill forests and edges but will also occasionally venture into parks and gardens.
