Van Hasselt's Sunbird
Leptocoma brasiliana
Attractive medium-sized sunbird of lowland forests, from coastal scrub forests to inland evergreen forests. Male is black with an iridescent pink-red throat, a red belly, and a glistening blue-green crown. Female is extensively yellowish with a pale vent and a thin dark line through the eye. Purple-throated Sunbird is essentially identical, but ranges do not overlap. Female Plain-throated Sunbird can be similar, but is straighter-billed, with a darker head, and a faint pale ring around the eye. Song, often given from an exposed perch, consists of squeaky rising whistles and chip notes.

Madagascar Owl
Asio madagascariensis
Fairly large, brown owl with long ear tufts. Endemic to Madagascar, where it is found locally in all forest types, and sometimes in scrub and plantations. Usually roosts high in a tree, often in an introduced pine tree. Call is a series of nasal barks, similar to White-browed Owl but less quick and emphatic. Similar in size to Marsh Owl, but has prominent ear tufts and a pale chest with fine streaks. Much larger than Malagasy and Torotoroka Scops-Owls.

Fernwren
Oreoscopus gutturalis
Small scrubwren-like bird found in wet rainforests at higher elevations in the Atherton Tablelands of far northern Queensland. Adult entirely brown except for white throat, black bib, and faint pale supercilium. Juvenile almost completely dark brown, with a faint hint of pale throat and brow. Forages on the ground in deep leaf litter. Call a series of high-pitched, penetrating notes followed by a longer note.

Aberdare Cisticola
Cisticola aberdare
A large and relatively colorful cisticola endemic to Kenya, found locally in montane grassland and moorland. The cap and back of the neck are dull rufous with darker streaking, the back is heavily streaked with black, and there is a rufous panel in the wings. As with other cisticolas, habitat and vocalizations are important to identification. Very similar to Stout Cisticola, but has streaking on the back of the neck. The common vocalizations are a quick series of several squeaky notes, and a series of lower liquid notes.
