Steely-vented Hummingbird
Saucerottia saucerottei
Fairly small dark hummingbird, green overall with dark blue tail. Straight, medium-length bill. Sexes similar. Usually seen feeding singly in flowers along forest edge, shrubby second growth, and gardens. Separated from Emeralds by longer bill, blue-and-white vent, bronze patch on rump, and less deeply forked tail.

Banded Yellow Robin
Eopsaltria placens
A medium-sized, localized bird of foothill forest. Orange legs, gray head and wings, olive back and chest band, bright yellow belly and incomplete collar from the lower throat around to the sides of the neck. Perches low down, motionlessly scanning the forest floor. Distinctive, but somewhat similar to Green-backed and White-faced Robins which both have white on the face. Song, a series of whistled notes “pwip! pyuu-pyuu-pyuu-pyuu-pyuu”. The first note rising followed by a gap, the followed by identical notes.

Red-necked Spurfowl
Pternistis afer
Large, chunky francolin with bare red skin on the throat and around the eye. There is much geographical variation in the presence or extent of white on the face, black-and-white streaking below, and black on the belly. Found in a wide range of habitats, including moist savanna, grassland, thickets, cultivation, and forest edge. The call is a series of rough “krek” notes, sometimes with a rollicking introduction. Bare red throat separates it from most other francolins. In areas of overlap with Swainson’s or Gray-breasted Francolins, Red-necked can be identified by black-and-white striped underparts.
