Channel-billed Toucan

An unusual and colorful rainforest bulbul. The upperparts are dark olive-green and the underparts yellow. Note the bright yellow patch between the bill, the brown eye, and the yellow spots on the tail corners. Found in the understory of rainforest and lush secondary habitat. Sometimes joins mixed-species flocks and follows ant swarms. Similar to Red-tailed Bristlebill, but easily separated by the green tail and the yellow spot on the face. The calls are chirpy notes typical of bulbuls, and the song is a variable descending series of melancholy whistles.

The largest of New Zealand’s kiwis. A reddish to dark brown kiwi with brown to black streaking. Inhabits native forest, tussock grassland, and neighboring farmland. Mostly nocturnal, with some day foraging observed on Stewart Island and certain locations in Fiordland. Restricted to the mountains near Haast, Fiordland, Stewart Island, and sanctuaries. Foraging produces clear audible sniffling. Males give a series of clear rising whistles while females give a harsh throaty wail. Both sexes repeat their call many times. Could be confused with Weka by voice and shape; look for the kiwi’s much longer bill and lack of tail, and listen for its multisyllabic call.

A mostly black tit with a white belly and white marks in the wings. Found in rather moist savanna and woodland and along forest edges, mostly at middle and higher elevations. Usually in pairs or small groups, and often joins mixed-species flocks. Call is a classic tit “chee-chee-di-di-di,” raspy and often repeated. The song consists of musical or slightly burry whistled phrases of 2-3 notes, each phrase repeated 2-3 times. Similar to black-tits, but easily separated by the white belly.
