Biak Flycatcher
Myiagra atra
A fairly small bird of wooded areas on the Bay Islands. Low crest is flattened at the front and rounded at the back. Male is glossy black with a purplish-blue iridescence. Female is medium gray above, pale gray below with brownish flight feathers and a darker mask, contrasting with the pale throat. Male similar to male Shining Flycatcher, but Biak is found in forest rather than waterside thickets and is smaller and less glossy. Often found in pairs and female has gray rather than rufous upperparts. Voice, a simple up-and-down whistled song and raspy call.

Pied Butcherbird
Cracticus nigrogularis
Medium-sized ambush-hunter with a long gray bill with a dark, hooked tip. Adult has black head, upper breast, back, and tail that contrast starkly with white nape, breast, belly, and wing pattern. Immature similarly patterned in brown instead of black. More likely than Gray Butcherbird to perch atop trees and poles. Beautiful fluting, whistling song, sometimes heard at night.

Black-banded Crake
Rufirallus fasciatus
Dark, orange-and-black, barred crake. Deep red orange, with black wings, and bold black barring on the undersides. Occurs along the base of the Andes and locally in the Amazonian lowlands. Found in dense, wet secondary growth, especially low vegetation on river islands and wet grassy patches. Listen for its long, musical trill; springier than that of other crakes.

Thekla's Lark
Galerida theklae
Very like Crested Lark, with which it often occurs. Best told by bill shape, which is shorter and stubbier, with a convex lower mandible. Crest is also shorter and more fanlike; rump is more contrasting and rusty-tinged. Breast streaks heavier and more contrasting than Crested Lark. Found in stony and sandy areas with scattered bushes in Iberia, North Africa and East Africa. More likely to perch up on bushes than Crested Lark. Song is a musical jumble of twitters, warbles, trills, and slurred notes.
