Scaly-crowned Babbler

Malacopteron cinereum

Small, dull, brownish babbler. Pale underparts. Faintly scaled crown is orangish and sets it apart from the dark-crowned but otherwise fairly similar Sooty-capped Babbler. Birds north of the Malay Peninsula and southern Thailand have a bicolored crown, with chestnut on the front half and dark on the back. Inhabits lowland and foothill forests, often in wet areas. Forages in noisy flocks, giving rapid-fire series of ticking notes.

Predicted Antwren

Herpsilochmus praedictus

Recently described Amazonian antwren. Males are gray with a bold white eyebrow and a black crown, wings, and tail. Females have white spots on a black crown and a rusty forehead. Found in humid forest, including seasonally flooded forest along big rivers and white sand forest, foraging from the middle levels to the canopy. Usually accompanies mixed-species flocks in the canopy. The song is a soft rolling trill. The rather similar male of the Aripuana Antwren has less black on the upperparts, and females have a paler forehead; Aripuana’s song is similar, but with fewer notes.

Coppery-headed Emerald

Microchera cupreiceps

Small hummingbird with obviously decurved bill. Male mostly glittering green with coppery crown and bright white outer tail feathers; female similar but with white underparts. Bill shape and white outer tail feathers are enough for identification. Found in forests and edges, usually singly but males sometimes gather to display.
