Scaly-breasted Partridge
Tropicoperdix chloropus
A cryptically-colored ground-dweller without the bright colors and bold head patterns boasted by many of its relatives. Mottled brown overall with a grayish-white face and a speckled orange throat. Forages in dense undergrowth like other partridges, usually in mature foothill and lowland forest. Listen for its song, a series of ascending breathy whistles which culminate in an echoing series of ringing notes. As with many other forest gamebirds, very difficult to see in general; most likely encountered at staked-out blinds, or, if one is lucky, walking quietly along roadsides and clearings at dusk and dawn.

Troglodytes troglodytes
Tiny brown bird that often holds its short little tail cocked up. Often sings from a fairly exposed perch, but at other times rather mouselike, creeping in brambles and understory. As such, can be quite inconspicuous. Favors wooded areas with a dense understory, as well as gardens, hedges in farmland, heathland, and coastal cliffs. Heard much more than seen: song is loud, bright, and musical, a varied series of trills and ringing warbles, repeated. Chipping calls can also give away its presence.
Kretschmer's Longbill
Macrosphenus kretschmeri
An unusual warbler with a long bill and pale eyes. Dull brownish overall with slightly paler underparts. Found in humid forest at low and middle elevations, mainly in dense tangles at middle levels, usually in pairs or small groups. Similar in appearance to some greenbuls, but has a shorter tail and a longer bill. Most often detected by the distinctive song: a chirpy phrase of 3-5 whistles in an up-and-down pattern, usually repeated after a pause. The quality of the notes is reminiscent of a bulbul.
New Caledonian Whistler
Pachycephala caledonica
Orangey-yellow and olive whistler with a gray head and contrasting white throat. Female is much plainer, dull olive-brown with paler underparts and whitish throat. Found throughout New Caledonia, preferring native forests but somewhat tolerant of disturbed habitats. Best found through its distinctive relatively low-pitched, snappy up-down clear whistled song.
