Scaly-breasted Partridge
Tropicoperdix chloropus
A cryptically-colored ground-dweller without the bright colors and bold head patterns boasted by many of its relatives. Mottled brown overall with a grayish-white face and a speckled orange throat. Forages in dense undergrowth like other partridges, usually in mature foothill and lowland forest. Listen for its song, a series of ascending breathy whistles which culminate in an echoing series of ringing notes. As with many other forest gamebirds, very difficult to see in general; most likely encountered at staked-out blinds, or, if one is lucky, walking quietly along roadsides and clearings at dusk and dawn.

Olive-chested Flycatcher
Myiophobus cryptoxanthus
Drab and unremarkable flycatcher found in the eastern foothills of the Andes in Ecuador and northern Peru. Note grayish-olive upperparts, dingy white underparts, yellow tinge to the belly, and pale wingbars. Yellow crown stripe is usually concealed. Habitat is a good ID clue: it perches low in grassy clearings with scattered bushes and small trees, and never ventures inside forest. Call is an inflected whistle repeated every few seconds, and song is a short, rising trill.

Black-faced Cormorant
Phalacrocorax fuscescens
Large black and white cormorant with dark face, white flanks, and black "trousers." Very similar to Pied Cormorant; note present species' black lores and chin. Almost exclusively found in marine environments, and unlikely to be seen away from the ocean.

Rusty-bellied Brushfinch
Atlapetes nationi
Distinctive brushfinch found at high elevations in the western Andes of Peru. The only brushfinch in Peru with a tawny belly and black head. Also note the tiny black mustache and the white throat. Some birds have white speckling on their heads. Inhabits dry slopes with bushes and scattered taller trees. Vocalizations include a rich, descending chatter and an irregular series of chips.
