Olive-chested Flycatcher

An acrobatic, swift-like raptor with angular wings and a massive gape; capable of snatching prey from the air and devouring it in a flash while still on the wing. Dark with varying amounts of white on the underside; African birds have patchy white throughout the underparts, while white is restricted to the throat and lower belly on New Guinean birds and solely to the throat in Southeast Asian birds. Inactive during the day; hunts at dawn and dusk, and occasionally into the night if light is sufficient. Generally uncommon and localized, most reliably encountered near large bat roosts in forested areas, but can also be seen over open forest, fields, and fringes of habitation.

Short-tailed antbird found in the understory of mature rainforest. Forages singly or in pairs, clinging sideways to vertical stems close to the ground; often follows army ant swarms, but usually does not associate with mixed species flocks. Males are gray with black scalloping on the back and black tail with white tip. Females vary in plumage geographically but are generally tawny buff with similar diagnostic black markings on the back and black-and-white tail; underparts gray in northeastern Amazonia, and underparts gray and upperparts uniform brown in southwestern Amazonia.

Attractive small “finch” that is actually a tanager; found in humid forest and wooded habitats in southern Chile and adjacent Argentina. Despite the name, not really a bird of dry Patagonian habitats. Often in groups, especially in winter, and feeds from the ground to high in trees. Male has a gray hood and distinctive golden back. Female and immature are similar to Gray-hooded Sierra-Finch, but are more extensively yellow below and the whisker marks are weaker.
