Puerto Rican Flycatcher

Small active antwren of the middle to upper levels of woodlands and dry forests. Males are gray with a black cap, a black white-tipped tail, and black wings with white bars. Differs from male of Black-capped Antwren in having gray spots on the otherwise pale breast. Females are very different from Black-capped Antwren in having a rufous head, breast, and belly.

Tiny, round quail of lowland plains, grassy hillsides, and farmland. Generally uncommon and often glimpsed only briefly as it flushes from almost underfoot. Male gorgeously attired, with a blue head and breast, deep cinnamon belly, and neat black-and-white throat markings. Female brown with a paler belly and a plain face; compare to the strong white brow of the larger Japanese Quail. Males give a descending, plaintive whistle, “tew-tew”, and a raspy, snoring call.

A small bird with a long blue tail that is held cocked. Breeding males are usually brilliant sapphire blue with bright white wing patches. Females and nonbreeding males are very plain pale gray, and the patch between the eye and bill (lores) is also pale (compared to Purple-backed Fairywren which has very dark reddish lores). This species is typically found in very open and arid country with sparse bushes, where it often perches on the very top of bushes. Its call is a very fast trill.
