White-tailed Tyrannulet
Mecocerculus poecilocercus
A small, pale, and active tyrannulet with a small bill. No bright colors; look for bold white eyebrow, pale yellowish rump, and two off-white wingbars. Tends to perch horizontally, often with its tail cocked up slightly. Flits actively, usually in the canopy and often part of a mixed-species flock. Occurs in cloud forest and edges from Colombia to Peru, from around 1,500 to 2,500 m. Similar to White-banded Tyrannulet, but smaller and found at lower elevations; also note White-banded’s thicker white eyebrow, gleaming white wingbars, and generally more contrasting plumage than White-tailed. Often detected by series of three or four squeaky “psee” notes coming from a canopy flock.

Eurasian Moorhen
Gallinula chloropus
Distinctive dark waterbird that resembles a cross between a duck and a chicken. Adults have a bright red bill with a yellow tip, while immatures have a duller bill and legs. Note big white oval patches under the tail, and white streaks along the flanks. Inhabits fresh and brackish marshes, on ponds, lakes, and along slow-moving watercourses with bordering vegetation. Smaller and more retiring than coot, and rarely far out on open water. Swims with jerky motion and walks with stealthy gait, the tail often slightly cocked; does not usually dive. Gives a variety of loud, somewhat frog-like calls.
Inca Wren
Pheugopedius eisenmanni
Boldly patterned wren with a localized range in southern Peru. Reddish brown, with a black-and-white streaked face and breast and a bold white eyebrow. Larger and longer-tailed than the similar Gray-breasted Wood-Wren. Found in dense undergrowth of humid montane forest, often in bamboo thickets. Listen for its rollicking whistled song, usually given in duet.
Hume's Boobook
Ninox obscura
A medium-sized, dark brown owl with distinctive yellow eyes. Note the small white spot between the eyes. Lower belly may often be paler and show some barring. Only active outside of daylight hours. Quite common throughout its range in plantations, forest edges, and groves. Call is a fluty, double-noted “whoo-up.”
