Spectacled Imperial-Pigeon

The spectacled imperial pigeon is a species in the large genus of imperial pigeons, Ducula. Within the genus, it is most closely related to the Seram imperial pigeon, with which it is sometimes considered conspecific. These two species form a species group with the green imperial pigeon and elegant imperial pigeon.<p>The species' generic name comes from the Neo-Latin ducula (duke), while the specific epithet perspicillata is from the Modern Latin perspicillata (spectacled), derived the Latin perspicillum (lens), which is itself from the Latin perspicere (to see through). Alternative names for the orange fruit dove include white-eyed imperial pigeon, white-spectacled imperial pigeon, and Moluccan imperial pigeon.<p>It is monotypic. However, the Seram imperial pigeon is sometimes considered to be a subspecies of this species.

Black-faced Cormorant
Phalacrocorax fuscescens
Large black and white cormorant with dark face, white flanks, and black "trousers." Very similar to Pied Cormorant; note present species' black lores and chin. Almost exclusively found in marine environments, and unlikely to be seen away from the ocean.
Amazonian Black-throated Trogon
Trogon rufus
Yellow-bellied trogon with pale blue or yellow eyering and yellowish bill. Male has shimmering green-blue upperparts and chest; female is brown. Underside of tail barred black and white with large white tips. Found in forested areas, usually sitting still at low to middle heights (often lower than other trogons in range). Male from Amazonian Trogon by head and chest color (greener, not deep blue), yellower bill, and voice. Brown color of female is distinctive, unlike slaty-gray of female Amazonian. Listen for song: a slow, evenly-spaced series of 3-6 slurred whistled notes.
Mexican Hermit
Phaethornis mexicanus
Spectacular large hummingbird of humid tropical lowlands and foothills; endemic to west Mexico. Favors shady forest understory and edges, especially with patches of Heliconia flowers. Males sit and sing tirelessly from perches in the understory while pumping their tail. When feeding, hovers briefly with long white tail streamers held nearly vertical and shoots off with an explosive squeak. Note the striped face, very long, arched bill, and rather drab plumage. No similar hummingbird species in its range.
