White Eared-Pheasant

Tiny cloud forest hummingbird found in the eastern Andes from central Peru to Bolivia. Male’s distinctive tail feathers cross each other and splay out in a V shape. Female can be identified by her small size, buffy thighs and vent, spotted underparts, and white whisker. May overlap with Peruvian Racket-tail in central Peru; male Rufous-booted has a twisted (not straight) tail. Females of the two species look almost identical. Typically feeds at small flowers at forest edge or in clearings, and sometimes visits feeders.

Medium-sized, elaborately patterned francolin. There is a striped head, a rufous nape, a white throat, and a band of black-and-white stripes around the neck. Shows at most a hint of rufous in the wings in flight. Found on the ground in grassy, open woodland. Shy, poorly known, and highly localized species. Distinctive call is a mournful series of several hollow notes that first go up, then descend. Somewhat similar to Coqui Francolin, but larger, with a different pattern below: mostly plain with a few bold streaks on the sides of the belly. Also similar to Red-winged Francolin, but has a cleaner white throat, lacks large red patches in the wings, and has a different pattern on the underparts.

A somewhat large, chunky dove of dry scrub woodlands where it is typically found foraging on ground. Its plain plumage, the lack of white on the wings, and the very limited white on its tail, distinguish it from other doves on Grenada. Its song is a drawn out low, plaintive “Hooooooo,” loudest near start. Critically endangered.
