Southern Martin

Progne elegans

Large swallow with pointed wings and slightly forked tail. Males are deep iridescent purple; females are also entirely dark, but are brownish below, with faint scaling. Migrates within South America; at some times of year, occurs with other very similar martin species, making identification difficult. Females lack the light belly of similar Purple and Gray-breasted Martins; males essentially indistinguishable from Purple Martin.

White-browed Hawk

White-browed Hawk

Leucopternis kuhli

Compact, black-and-white forest hawk. Short tail and broad wings give it a chunkier appearance than other interior forest raptors like forest-falcons and hawks in the genus Accipiter. White below, black above, with a white eyebrow. Has a darker black-streaked head and more noticeable white eyebrows than the similar Black-faced Hawk, which has a white head with a small black mask. Found singly or in pairs in the midstory and canopy of mature rainforest.

Ornate Lorikeet

Ornate Lorikeet

Trichoglossus ornatus

A striking, brightly-colored long-tailed parrot confined to Sulawesi and satellite islands. Green with an orange bill, a purple face, a red throat and red-barred chest, and a prominent yellow stripe on the side of the neck. Juveniles have a brown bill and a yellow belly. Found in pairs or small parties in upper levels of forest and wooded areas, including plantations, in lowlands and foothills. Unmistakable, as it is the only long-tailed parakeet with red markings in its limited range. Utters various shrill screeches such as “KREET!” and “SKEET!”

Junin Grebe

Junin Grebe

Podiceps taczanowskii

Critically endangered grebe found only on Lake Junín in the high Andes of central Peru. Adults are gray and white with a ruby-red eye; young birds have a brownish tinge. Extremely similar to the far more common Silvery Grebe, but Junin Grebe is slightly larger with a longer bill, a skinnier neck, darker flanks, and a paler bill. These differences are more evident when both species are present, to allow for direct comparison. Not easily seen or identified from the lakeshore; a boat is usually needed for close-up views.
