Muisca Antpitta

Grallaria rufula

Plump bird with long legs and a short tail that ranges in the eastern Andes of Colombia, barely reaching over the border into Venezuela. Plumage is chestnut brown with an orange tinge to the breast and slightly paler belly; sometimes shows a faint mustache streak. Skulks in the understory of high elevation elfin forest and usually stays on the ground, but sometimes comes up to a low perch to sing. Common vocalization is a sweet, rising whistle followed by a lower pitched gargle, and also gives a series of flat whistles. It used to be called Rufous Antpitta.

分类信息

The Muisca antpitta inherited the scientific name (Grallaria rufula) after the rufous antpitta's taxonomic split because the type specimen for G. rufula was found near Bogotá in what is now recognized as the Muisca antpitta's range. The 12 species resulting from the split were separated based on plumage, vocalization and genetic evidence.
The newly revised Muisca antpitta has no subspecies and is thus monotypic.
The common name was chosen in 2020 for the Muisca civilization of the eastern Andes, which continues to this day in contemporary Colombian society. The specific name, rufula, comes from the Latin for 'red-headed' or rufous.

It inhabits humid montane forests and is most commonly found in the understory and on the forest floor.
It is separated from the closely related Perijá antpitta by the Serranía de Los Motilones mountain range, and it is separated from most of the Equatorial antpitta population by the Magdalena river valley.

保护状况

The rufous antpitta was considered to be of least concern by the IUCN Red List, but since the taxonomic split a re-evaluation of the resulting species is necessary. The Perijá antpitta is already rated endangered by the IUCN.

Lowland Sooty Boubou

Lowland Sooty Boubou

Laniarius leucorhynchus

An entirely dark boubou found in thickets and dense vegetation. Widespread, but can be surprisingly rare and local in many parts of its range. A distinctively nondescript medium-sized skulking forest bird whose most obvious field mark is a lack of field marks, as it is wholly dark all over. The scientific name, which means “white-billed,” refers to young birds, whose bills start out white and darken with age. Similar to other species of sooty boubou, but Lowland Sooty Boubou is found at lower elevations and has a distinctive voice: a series of drawn out, ringing hoots or whistles, given singly or in short groups. Calls are harsh, sometimes mechanical chatters.

Sooty Chat

Sooty Chat

Myrmecocichla nigra

Chunky, dark robin-like bird. Males are black with a white shoulder patch, while females are solidly dark gray. Found in grassland, open woodland, and farmland, often in areas with lots of termite mounds. The song is a variable, exuberant mix of whistling and rattling notes which can be given from a prominent perch or in display flight. Similar to Northern Anteater-Chat, but lacks large white patches in the outer wing. Also similar to White-fronted Black-Chat, but larger and chunkier, and male lacks white front.

Eyebrowed Wren-Babbler

Eyebrowed Wren-Babbler

Napothera epilepidota

While furtive, this tiny skulker is distinctive if seen well. Short-tailed and large-headed in profile, somewhat like a vole or shrew. Brown with a pale throat, white eyebrow, and white speckling on the upper body. Both undersides and uppersides are streaked with white, though the prominence of this streaking depends on the lighting. Appearance varies slightly across range. Song, composed of a single airy monotone or slightly falling whistle repeated at 3- to 5-second intervals, is hauntingly ventriloquial. Found in tropical and subtropical evergreen forests with dense understoreys, from lowlands up into submontane areas.
