Lowland Sooty Boubou
Laniarius leucorhynchus
An entirely dark boubou found in thickets and dense vegetation. Widespread, but can be surprisingly rare and local in many parts of its range. A distinctively nondescript medium-sized skulking forest bird whose most obvious field mark is a lack of field marks, as it is wholly dark all over. The scientific name, which means “white-billed,” refers to young birds, whose bills start out white and darken with age. Similar to other species of sooty boubou, but Lowland Sooty Boubou is found at lower elevations and has a distinctive voice: a series of drawn out, ringing hoots or whistles, given singly or in short groups. Calls are harsh, sometimes mechanical chatters.

Brown-winged Starling
Aplonis grandis
A uniformly dark starling with a purplish-glossy sheen to the head and chest and a greener sheen on the body. Eye red. Pale brown wing feathers distinctive and diagnostic. Prefers forest and forest edge up to 750 meters of elevation, and up to 1200 meters on Guadalcanal. Common call is a melodic, metallic “pink pink.” Song is a medley of metallic warbles, chips, squeaks, and other sounds.

Yellow-billed Cotinga
Carpodectes antoniae
Male is entirely snowy white with stout yellow bill. Female also has yellow bill, but body is entirely pale gray with obvious white edges on wing feathers. Rather chunky body with short tail and smoothly rounded head, large black eye. Flies with unique, slow and deep wingbeats. Distinctive in limited range. Found in canopy of forests and mangroves; often seen around fruiting trees. Frequently perches conspicuously. Quiet.

Orange-billed Sparrow
Arremon aurantiirostris
Boldly patterned, rather chunky sparrow of humid evergreen forest and edge in tropical lowlands. Usually on or near the ground in shady understory and thickets; often in pairs. Bright orange bill virtually glows in the dark; also note the bold black-and-white head pattern and black chest setting off the white throat. No similar species in its lowland range.
