Ryukyu Scops-Owl
Otus elegans
Diminutive brownish owl with short ear tufts and pale face narrowly bordered in black. Combination of overall brown coloration, yellow eyes, and small size distinguishes it from the larger Oriental and Japanese Scops-Owls. Like other scops-owls, often difficult to see; listen for its hiccuping hoots, given in a long series. Inhabits forests and adjacent edges throughout its range.

The distribution of the Otus elegans botelensis is restricted by the distribution of naturally occurring tree holes. The size of the holes is usually a diameter at breast height (dbh) of more than 38 cm. Different type of trees provides differing quantities of such holes for the Otus elegans botelensis. Observation had revealed that tree holes are more likely to form in Pometia pinnata compared to other types of tree, therefore, areas with lots of Pometia pinnata have greater densities of the Otus elegans botelensis.: 7 It is found on the Ryukyu Islands of southern Japan, on Lanyu Island off south-east Taiwan, and on the Batanes and Babuyan Islands off northern Luzon, Philippines, in tropical or subtropical evergreen forest. It is becoming rare due to habitat loss.

Celebesica abbotti
A distinctive small cuckooshrike with bright white underbody, a dusky gray upperside, and a prominent red eye. Males display a contrasting black face and chin, while females’ faces have the same gray color as the back. An arboreal bird, usually encountered singly or in pairs (or occasionally small parties) within mixed-species flocks in canopy of montane forest. Song starts with one or two piercing high “whit” notes followed by a short jumble of four notes. Also gives single high-pitched “whit” and “seep” calls.

Tiny, highly endangered hummingbird found very locally in the desert of northern Chile. Favors native desert scrub in lowland valleys, but widely eliminated from most areas by intensive agriculture. Male most often detected by insectlike buzz made by wings in flight. Also perches conspicuously atop bushes and on wires; note diagnostic crossed tail feathers. Female similar to Peruvian Sheartail, but has shorter tail with pale rusty bases to outer feathers (hard to see).

Chalcites basalis
A small greenish bird with a barred chest and tail, and a dark stripe through the eye that droops down across the cheek. Young birds can be almost unbarred and may appear similar to the grayer Black-eared Cuckoo. Often perches prominently on top of a shrub or tree, and calls repeatedly with a loud piercing descending whistle. Occurs in Indonesia and across much of Australia (including arid inland areas).
