White-headed Petrel
Pterodroma lessonii
A large gadfly petrel with a pale white head and a distinctive dark eye-patch. Back is pale gray with darker outer wings, creating an “M” shape on the back. Look for stout black bill and pinkish-colored feet. Breed on Antipodes and Auckland Islands in the New Zealand region and also on subantarctic Indian Ocean and Macquarie Islands. Forages between the subantarctic and Antarctic convergence zones. Three similar species: Soft-plumaged Petrel is smaller with gray-brown head and band on upper breast; Gray Petrel is larger with a smaller, darker head, a pale green bill, and a long neck; and pale morph Kermadec Petrel is smaller, lacks an eye patch, has darker upperparts, and shows white patches under the wing.
识别特征
The white-headed petrel distinct with a pale white head and prominent dark eye patch. It has long narrow wings and long pointed tail. The upper surface is pale grey which is contrasting with darker grey on the upper wings and the rump. The underside is mostly white. The bill is stout black with a large sharp hook. Green glands are prominent. The legs are pinkish to whitish with black patches on the toes.

Malawi Batis
Batis dimorpha
A cute, dumpy, colorful flycatcher-like bird that flits around in the mid-canopy and understory of forest, forest edge, plantations, and gardens. Males have a broad black chest band, yellow-orange eye, white stripe through the top of the wing, and white throat. Females have an orange eye, buff-and-white stripe through the top of the wing, and rufous chin patch. The song is a series of 8-9 plaintive steady piping “peooop” notes, and calls include buzzing grating “ddrz-drrzt-drrr, ddt-ddzt-drzt-drr”. Female Dark Batis is distinguished by its darker (rich rufous rather than white and buff) wing stripe. Male Dark Batis is very similar, but has a slightly longer tail and broader black breast stripe. Also similar to Chinspot Batis, but has darker orange color to the eyes, and female Malawi Batis shows paler rufous on the throat and buff tinges to the wing stripe.
Black-throated Prinia
Prinia atrogularis
Very long tailed prinia of hilly and montane areas, descending to foothills in winter. Plain with brown upperparts, slightly rustier on the wing, and paler belly. Breeding adult’s gray head, white moustache stripe, black throat and chest are unique. Favors scrubby, and open areas such as clearings and forest and field edge. Breeding plumage unmistakable. Non-breeding plumage somewhat similar to Himalayan Prinia, but Black-throated has unstreaked upperparts and white eyebrow. Song is a repetitive series of “plik” notes. Often gives buzzy call notes.
Black-faced Sheathbill
Chionis minor
A bizarre pure white bird with pinkish legs and eye-ring and bare black skin in front of the eye. Bill is large and black with tubelike nostrils. A ground-dwelling scavenger. No similar birds occur within its range. Mostly silent, but occasionally gives short rattling, croaking notes.
