Pale-headed Woodpecker

Gecinulus grantia

A bamboo specialist, this is an odd-looking woodpecker with a dark body, sickly-looking pale head, and blood-red patches on the wings. Gives short rapid-fire bursts of drums which, due to the hollow stems of bamboo, often have an odd, reverberating quality. Pale bill is significantly shorter than that of the larger Bay Woodpecker, which seldom drums, if at all.

Yellow-breasted Forest Robin

Yellow-breasted Forest Robin

Stiphrornis mabirae

A short-tailed understory robin with a bright yellow-orange throat. Also shows a dark-green back, buff belly, and a white spot in front of the eye. Most often encountered by its song: a duet, in which the male gives high-pitched whistles and the female makes an accompanying chatter. Similar to Orange-breasted Forest Robin (potentially very limited overlap in range), but underparts more extensively yellowish-orange. Otherwise most likely to be confused with Lowland Akalat, but can always be distinguished by the white spot in front of the eye, as well as the dark-green rather than rufous-brown back, and the buff rather than white belly.

Marbled Duck

Marbled Duck

Marmaronetta angustirostris

Small, subtly beautiful, gray-brown duck with a black eye-mask, long neck and wings, and dark bill. Vaguely resembles a female pintail. Both sexes are similar but males sport a more prominent shaggy crest. In flight looks pallid, with whitish underwings, pale secondaries, and dark wingtips. Mostly silent. Typically found in shallow, freshwater or brackish wetlands with abundant emergent vegetation.

Masked Crimson Tanager

Masked Crimson Tanager

Ramphocelus nigrogularis

Small, attractive tanager; bright crimson and black with a black mask and silver bill. Most commonly found in vegetation around oxbow lakes, also sometimes found in nearby forests and along rivers. Sexes similar though females are slightly duller than males. Extensive crimson and black mask easily distinguish this species from other tanagers within its range.
