Madagascar Starling
Hartlaubius auratus
Slim, dark-brown starling. Male is rich brown while female is paler and grayer. Both sexes have a big white patch in the wing that is conspicuous in flight. Madagascar endemic that is found most commonly in rainforest, but also in dry deciduous forest, gallery forest, scrub, and plantations. Usually found in pairs or small flocks, often around fruiting trees. Call is a simple “pu-leet” that is often given in flight. Much smaller and slimmer than Common Myna. Unlike Madagascar Bulbul, shows a dark bill and a white wing patch.

Crissal Thrasher
Toxostoma crissale
Dark grayish thrasher with distinctive rufous undertail coverts. Bill long and strongly curved. Tail long and dark. Obvious dark line separating white mustache and white throat. Yellow eye. Secretive and uncommon, although perches conspicuously when singing. Found in brushy deserts. With a good view, easily distinguished from more common Curve-billed Thrasher by darker gray color and rufous undertail coverts. Listen for jumbled, rambling song.

Rose-headed Parakeet
Pyrrhura rhodocephala
Green parakeet with a long red tail, prominent white patch in wings, white eyering, and red ear patch and crown. Mostly seen in large flocks flying, eating fruits, or perching quietly in trees. Common in cloud forests and forest edges. Voice similar to related species. Similar in flight to Red-eared Parakeet but shows white wing patch and red crown, and almost no range overlap. Endemic to the Andes of Venezuela.

Abyssinian White-eye
Zosterops abyssinicus
A small, sharp-billed warbler-like bird. Note the yellow throat, gray underparts, and narrow white spectacles around the eyes. Found in woodland, montane forest edge, mangroves, gardens, and scrub. Usually in hyperactive flocks, often joining mixed-species flocks. Similar to Heuglin’s White-eye, and some individuals are difficult to separate, but generally shows a narrower eye-ring. Most common call is a high-pitched rising rattle. Song is a quiet, chatty sequence of “chew” notes.
