Sad Flycatcher

Medium-sized eagle with short, rounded wings. Adult is dark brown above and white with heavy streaking and barring below. Perched birds show a prominent vertical crest. When in flight, note prominent “fingers”, black-striped white throat, and bold black banding on the flight feathers and tail. Juvenile has a pale tan head and underparts, a shorter crest, and paler black banding on the wings and tail. Pale morph Changeable Hawk-Eagle can be similar, but note present species’ more densely patterned underparts and wings, taller crest, and tan (not white) head in juveniles. Endemic to Java, where it is now largely limited to foothill and montane forests. Soars often, but also frequently perches silently in the canopy. Quiet, but occasionally gives thin yelping screams.

Bulbul-sized large warbler with a long tail, a stubby bill, and a plain face. Breeds in East Asia; winters in South and Southeast Asia. Structurally similar to Clamorous Reed Warbler but has a shorter, blunter bill, no eye-stripe or brow, different vocalizations, and no particular preference for water. Rather skulky, it keeps to dense grasses, forest edge, and shrubbery. Song is long and complex, consisting of short bursts of high piercing notes, harsh snappy chattering, and mellow warbles. Calls include a hard, fast, continuous arrhythmic “thk…thk, thk, thk” emanating but from the undergrowth.

An endangered raptor found only in western Ecuador and immediately adjacent parts of Peru. It has white underparts, dark gray back and wings, and gray streaks on the head. Its tail is white with a thick black band near the tip that is especially evident in flight. Restricted to areas where extensive forest cover remains. Prefers dry and semi-humid areas; not normally present in the wetter forests of northwestern Ecuador, but may occasionally wander into them.
