Mariana Fruit-Dove

A rather nondescript medium-sized wren. Mostly brown above and rusty below, with a white eyebrow and pied streaked cheeks. Skulks in the undergrowth of seasonally flooded forest and second growth, often near water. The similar Buff-breasted Wren has less strongly marked cheeks and a more complex song. Where the two overlap, Fawn-breasted is more likely to be found in wetter habitats.

Stout medium-sized bird of foothill and montane forests. Endemic to Java, where it is the only “white-browed” shrike-babbler. Male is dark above and white below, with a bold yellow wing panel and bright white eyebrow. Female averages duller than the male, with grayish upperparts, olive-yellow wings, and a weaker white eyebrow. Hops about in the middle and upper levels of forest, gleaning prey from branches and leaf clusters. Sometimes with mixed flocks. Song is a bright but rather bland series of 3-5 notes: “wi-chew-chew” or “wi-chew-ba-chew-ba.”

Attractive stout-billed toucanet of lowland rainforest. Males are black above, brown below, with a yellow patch extending through the eye; females similar but red-brown above. Typically found in mature upland rainforest, but occasionally found around forest edges and in floodplain forest. Listen for its distinctive growling call, a repeated “grruk” guttural grunt.
