Peruvian Booby

Sula variegata

Common and conspicuous seabird of coastlines and inshore waters along the Humboldt Current. Sometimes in flocks of hundreds, diving steeply into the sea among feeding frenzies of cormorants, gulls, and terns. Also seen perched on jetties and cliffs; often with cormorants and pelicans. Adult is distinctive with a snow-white head and neck, and dark upperparts with white scaling on back. Juvenile is dingier overall with a dusky head and body. Compare with Blue-footed Booby (often occurs with Peruvian), which always has white body contrasting with dusky neck.

分布与栖息地

The Peruvian booby is confined to the waters of the Humboldt current, off the coast of South America. They can be found off the shores of Peru, south to the middle part of Chile. Their abundance on the islands of Lobos de Tierra and Lobos de Afuera have resulted in a great deal of research being done on the species from these locations.<p>Their colonies nest on smooth, windswept sand flats that allow their nests to stay between a temperature range of approximately 28 °C to 38 °C. These salt flats, or pampas, allow for a fairly high density of booby nests.

Edolisoma erythropygium

Small cuckooshrike with a restricted range, found only on the Solomon Islands, as well as a couple small islands off of New Ireland. Males are mainly gray with black on the face, wing, and tail. Distinctive female is mostly rufous-brown, with buffy underparts. There is geographical variation, with females unbarred in most of the range, but showing barred underparts in some places. Found singly or in pairs in forest and forest edge habitats at low and middle elevations. Vocalizations poorly known, but include a long series of “chyap” notes.

Guadalcanal Owl

Athene granti

A rather small owl with lightly spotted brown upperparts and creamy underparts thickly barred with reddish brown. Inhabits forests from lowlands up into the highlands. Unlikely to be confused with any other species in its very limited range. Listen for its monotonous “poot” calls, sometimes given in duet. Formerly lumped with West Solomons Owl, Malaita Owl, and Makira Owl under the name “Solomons Boobook.”

White-throated Rock-Thrush

White-throated Rock-Thrush

Monticola gularis

Uncommon throughout most of its range, this elusive rock thrush breeds in rocky hill forest in northeastern China and Russia and migrates down the East Asian coast to winter in southern China and mainland Southeast Asia. Beautiful and distinctive male has a blue crown, orange underparts, and black wings marked with a bright white patch; small white patch on throat is not obvious and difficult to see. Female is brown with scaly markings on her back and breast; she lacks a pale crescent behind the eye. Usually stays low in shrubbery, but male will sing from an exposed perch.
