Central Melanesian Cicadabird
Edolisoma erythropygium
Small cuckooshrike with a restricted range, found only on the Solomon Islands, as well as a couple small islands off of New Ireland. Males are mainly gray with black on the face, wing, and tail. Distinctive female is mostly rufous-brown, with buffy underparts. There is geographical variation, with females unbarred in most of the range, but showing barred underparts in some places. Found singly or in pairs in forest and forest edge habitats at low and middle elevations. Vocalizations poorly known, but include a long series of “chyap” notes.

Solitary Tinamou
Tinamus solitarius
Large, dumpy, almost tailless terrestrial inhabitant of the Atlantic Forest, where it walks quietly through forests with an open understory. This tinamou has a gray-brown barred back and vent, pale gray on the belly with a prominent pale stripe on the side of the neck. Very secretive, best identified by song, a series of “frru” whistles with long silences between them.
White-throated Seedeater
Sporophila albogularis
An endemic small finchlike species of north-eastern Brazil, notable for its thick bill. Males have a white throat that wraps around the side of the head, a black breast band, and gray-black upperparts. Note the male’s large yellow bill and white wing spot. Females are similar to other seedeaters being rather nondescript olive-brown above and buffy below. Inhabits scrubby savannah, dry woodlands, and adjacent open areas; often mixing with others seedeaters.
Western Orphean Warbler
Curruca hortensis
Large warbler with a dark head contrasting with white throat. Pale eye in adults. Told from Eastern Orphean Warbler by its browner (not gray) back and plain buffy (not spotted) undertail. Breeds in deciduous woodland and tall scrub, orchards, abandoned gardens, and riverine belts. Spends the non-breeding season in dry open habitats with sparse trees and scrubby plant cover. Song is simple and quite different from Eastern: "Turu turu turu turu.... liru liru turu." Call is a clicking "teck."
