Purple-naped Spiderhunter
Kurochkinegramma hypogrammicum
Dark and mostly drab sunbirdlike inhabitant of tropical forests, plantations, and gardens. Iridescent purple nape and rump are diagnostic, but can easily be missed in the gloom of dense forest. Olive-green upperparts and streaked belly, along with a dark, slightly curved bill, are sufficient to distinguish this species from other spiderhunters and sunbirds in its range. Like many other spiderhunters, calls loudly, harshly, and persistently as it forages.

Biak Flycatcher
Myiagra atra
A fairly small bird of wooded areas on the Bay Islands. Low crest is flattened at the front and rounded at the back. Male is glossy black with a purplish-blue iridescence. Female is medium gray above, pale gray below with brownish flight feathers and a darker mask, contrasting with the pale throat. Male similar to male Shining Flycatcher, but Biak is found in forest rather than waterside thickets and is smaller and less glossy. Often found in pairs and female has gray rather than rufous upperparts. Voice, a simple up-and-down whistled song and raspy call.

Purple-backed Sunbeam
Aglaeactis aliciae
Blotchy hummingbird restricted to a tiny, remote area in the Andes of northern Peru. Plumage is bronzy-brown with irregular white patches on the face, throat, and belly, and white teardrop-shaped spots on breast. Adult male has an iridescent purple and green lower back, but this is indistinct or lacking on females and younger birds.

Vermilion Cardinal
Cardinalis phoeniceus
A garish scarlet bird sporting a dramatic spiky crest and a hefty gray bill. Male overall brilliant red with black chin; female brown, gray-headed, with red crest and tail. Often found in pairs, perched in erect posture on the top of bushes or on exposed branches. Common in desert scrub and dry forests in the lowlands. Voice a melodious and slow whistled series. Unmistakable in arid regions of northern Venezuela and extreme northeastern Colombia.
