Sharp-tailed Starling
Lamprotornis acuticaudus
Iridescent green, slim-looking glossy starling. The eye is red in males and orange in females. Although the wedge-shaped tail is distinctive when clearly seen, it’s often not obvious in the field. Uncommon and local in miombo and Zambezi teak broadleaf woodland. Usually in small flocks. The song is a chattering jumble, and the call is an upslurred “sweeit.” Can look very similar to other glossy starlings, but separated by the wedge-shaped tail, the more elongated overall shape, and the lack of purple or blue in the plumage.

Bronze-olive Pygmy-Tyrant
Pseudotriccus pelzelni
A tiny, rotund flycatcher found singly in the understory of montane forest from Panama to Peru. Very nondescript plumage: darker olive above with a dull tawny breast and yellowish belly. Looks uniformly brownish in bad light. Usually stays low, where it perches quietly and sallies out to glean insects. Often detected by its snapping sounds and whirring wingbeats. Occurs from around 700–2,000 m, typically lower than Rufous-headed Pygmy-Tyrant but some elevation overlap.
Rio de Janeiro Antbird
Cercomacra brasiliana
Medium-sized gray antbird with a long tail. An inhabitant of the understory of dense humid forest. Males are gray with a white patch on the back that is usually concealed. Females are rufous-brown overall. Both sexes have white spots on the wing coverts and white-tipped undertail feathers.
Streak-capped Antwren
Terenura maculata
Tiny hyperactive antwren of the canopy in humid forest and second growth, where it often follows mixed-species flocks. Males are heavily streaked on the head and flanks with a rufous back, dark wings with pale yellowish underparts below. Females are similar, but are paler overall with a buffy throat and buffier streaking on the head. The song is a dry rattle.
