Obscure Honeyeater

A small, slender-billed, warbler-like waxbill with pinkish-brown legs and different-looking sexes: the male has a red forehead, dull brown upperparts, and a rusty-chestnut face and underparts, while the female has a tawny-brown face and cheeks, pale buff underparts with scattered dark chevrons, and dull brown upperparts. Pairs and small groups forage by themselves or in mixed-species flocks, in the understory and middle levels of primary, secondary, and gallery forest, often near water. Eats insects, with a fondness for ants. Call is a high-pitched, downslurred “whseet.” 

A distinctive white-eye, mostly dark brown above and buff below. Note the large black beady eye with a broad pale eye-ring, the long yellow bill, and the yellow legs. Most common in primary forest, less common in secondary growth. Common call is a “chip” note. Seldom heard singing.

An active, slender, unstreaked warbler with a long graduated tail that is sometimes cocked. Gray above and pale below. Males and females are similar, but males have a richer rufous face. Found in virtually all habitats on the island of Sao Tome, though especially fond of scrub, plantations, and gardens. Easily identified, as it is the only warbler on Sao Tome. The song is a long series of high-pitched “siip” notes that are sometimes doubled.
