Yungas Tyrannulet

Small tanager-like bird with sharply hooked, slightly upturned bill. Black body and chestnut belly set off by blue-gray eyebrow and shoulder patch. Sexes similar. Usually alone or in pairs piercing flowers in bushes, gardens, forest edges, and paramo. At high elevations, above 2400 m. Very territorial. Song a series of tinkling notes. No similar flowerpiercers in range, but may be confused with Blue-backed Conebill, which is brighter and larger with a blue back and pointed bill. Endemic to the Andes of Venezuela.

Rare eagle breeding only in Spain and Portugal, with some immatures dispersing into North Africa. Very similar to the closely-related Imperial Eagle, but is darker overall and adults have a distinctive white leading wing edge on the shoulders which can been seen from below when flying. Juveniles are rufous and largely unstreaked on the upperwings, underwings, and the breast compared to the heavily streaked Imperial Eagles. Mostly found in remote forested landscapes, especially those with a high density of rabbits.

A small bird of lowland grasslands in the Trans-Fly of New Guinea. Gray-brown back, white head, black throat. Rufous underparts and rump with a yellow tail and thick silver bill. The adult’s black throat is unmistakable. Juvenile White-spotted or Black Munias are similar but juvenile Gray-crowned is more uniform in color without any spots. Voice, soft twittering or individual “wik!” notes.
