Gray-crowned Munia
Lonchura nevermanni
A small bird of lowland grasslands in the Trans-Fly of New Guinea. Gray-brown back, white head, black throat. Rufous underparts and rump with a yellow tail and thick silver bill. The adult’s black throat is unmistakable. Juvenile White-spotted or Black Munias are similar but juvenile Gray-crowned is more uniform in color without any spots. Voice, soft twittering or individual “wik!” notes.

Red-capped Coua
Coua ruficeps
Long-tailed, long-legged understory bird with a reddish cap. Found in dry deciduous forest at low elevations in western Madagascar. Sometimes uses degraded forest. Rather shy, and quickly walks away from any disturbance. Most common calls are an explosive, ascending series of whistles and a low-pitched “hoo-hoo-hoo”. Similar to Coquerel’s Coua, but has longer tail and legs, and lacks the rufous belly of Coquerel’s. Smaller than Giant Coua, without its rufous belly and pink facial skin.
Von der Decken's Hornbill
Tockus deckeni
A medium-sized black-and-white hornbill. Males have a mostly red bill with a yellow or white tip; females have an all-black bill. Both sexes show a mostly black wing. Generally common in dry savanna, usually in pairs or small groups. Similar to Jackson’s and Northern Red-billed Hornbills, but separated from the former by the unspotted black wing and from the latter by the yellow-tipped (male) or all-black (female) bill. The call is a series of raspy clucks, often given as a duet by a pair.

Tiny parrot with short tail. Male mostly bright green with blue around the eyes, wings, and rump. Female all green without blue. Typically found in flocks, sometimes numbering a hundred or more, in open woodland or brushy agricultural areas in lowlands.
