Glow-throated Hummingbird

Selasphorus ardens

Tiny, poorly-known hummingbird with extremely limited range in western Panama. Males are greenish above with rusty flanks, a pinkish-red throat, and a white collar. Note dark tail with rufous edging. Compare with male Scintillant Hummingbird, which has a mostly rufous tail and an orange throat. Female Glow-throated has a speckled throat, buffy flanks, and greenish upperparts. The central tail feathers are greenish while the rest of tail is rufous with a black band and buffy tips. Female Scintillant is very similar and may not be separable in the field, but has more extensive rufous edges on central tail feathers. Found at the edge of montane forest from around 750–1,800 m.

The glow-throated hummingbird is about 7 cm (2.8 in) long. Both sexes have a short, straight, black bill. The adult male has bronzy green upperparts and the tail feathers are black with rufous edges. Its gorget is pinkish red with a white foreneck below it. The center of the breast and belly are also white and the rest of the underparts buffy to cinnamon with green spangles and buffy white undertail coverts. Adult females are also bronzy green above. Their central tail feathers are green; the rest have rufous bases, a black band near the end, and deep buffy tips. The throat is pale buff with grayish speckles and the rest of the underparts are like the male's. Immature birds resemble adult females but have rusty fringes on their head and nape feathers and more green on the tail.

分布与栖息地

The glow-throated hummingbird is found only in west-central Panama's Chiriquí and Veruagas provinces. It was historically found more widely in Serranía de Tabasará but since the early 20th century is known only from Cerro Colorado and Cerro Flores in Chiriquí and Cerro Tute and the Santa Fé district in Veraguas. There are unsatisfactory sight records from the Azuero Peninsula, where its presence is considered hypothetical. It inhabits the edges and clearings of Talamancan montane forest at elevations between 750 and 1,800 m (2,500 and 5,900 ft).

Bornean Crested Fireback

Lophura ignita

A spectacular dark pheasant of tropical lowland and lower montane rainforests. Male is glossy blue-black with a tufted crest and female is warm chocolate brown. Note the electric blue facial skin and whitish legs. Similar to Bulwer’s Pheasant but male Bornean Crested has bright orange belly and yellowish tail; female has pale-edged feathers on the underparts. Forages singly or in small groups on the forest floor. Shy but has become habituated in some places. Gives guttural “chuckit!” or soft ”weep” calls. Males also give a wing-whirring display.

Angola Swallow

Angola Swallow

Hirundo angolensis

A small swallow with blue upperparts, chestnut forecrown, and throat with a narrow incomplete dark breast band and gray underparts. Singles, pairs and groups are residents and intra-African migrants to open grassland, cultivation, and wetland fringes. Barn Swallow is similar to Angola but is larger with much longer outer tail feathers, broader complete breast band and white underparts; Ethiopian Swallow has buff (not chestnut) throat and white (not gray) underparts. Vocalizations include typically swallow-like weak twitters.

Arabian Bustard

Arabian Bustard

Ardeotis arabs

A large, long-necked bustard with a small crest at the back of the head and white spots on the wing coverts. The sexes have similar plumage, but females are smaller and slimmer. Found in dry savanna, grassland, and desert, usually in pairs or loose groups. Similar to Kori Bustard, but smaller and slimmer, and lacks black at the base of the neck and along the front of the wing. Similar in size to Dehnam’s Bustard, but lacks rufous on the back of the neck. Not very vocal, but will give a low-pitched growling note when displaying or when flushed.
