Kilombero Weaver
Ploceus burnieri
A fairly small and slim weaver with a relatively slender bill. Breeding male is distinctive, with bright yellow overall plumage and a black-and-chestnut bib. Females and non-breeding males are much duller, but show streaking on the back and usually a pale base to the dark bill. Found in a small range in central Tanzania, in reedbeds along rivers, often in flocks. Nests colonially. Plumages other than the breeding male’s can be hard to separate from other weavers, especially Vitelline Masked-Weaver, but can be cautiously identified by their dark back, by their less yellow overall coloration, and by range. Vocalizations are typical of weavers: “chek” notes and a sizzling “radio static” song.

Black Siskin
Spinus atratus
Stunning and distinctive small finch of the high Andes; favors puna grasslands with shrubs, rocky slopes, and bogs. Black head and body is diagnostic among siskins; yellow wing and tail patches mostly concealed on perched birds, but very flashy in flight. Sexes look similar, but juvenile has an orangish bill and buffy wingbars. Feeds in low bushes and on the ground, sometimes in association with other small seed-eating birds, but also in small groups of its own kind.

White-bellied Antbird
Myrmeciza longipes
Medium-sized antbird with a disjunct range from Panama to Brazil. Variable plumage across range. Male generally rufous above and gray below with a white lower belly and blackish face and throat. Females are brown below with dark spotting on the wing coverts. Occurs in pairs in the dense understory of forest edge and second growth; often skulky and difficult to see well. Listen for a rapid trill that starts high and descends in both speed and pitch.

Northern Pintail
Anas acuta
Elegant, slender duck with long neck and tail. Males have a chocolate brown head with a white slash coming up the neck, white breast, and mostly gray body. Females are patterned light brown. Forages in wetlands and in fields on agricultural waste grains.
