Golden-browed Warbler
Basileuterus belli
Attractive warbler of shady dense understory in highland forests. Favors relatively humid pine-oak, fir, and pine-evergreen forest, where often quite skulking. Typically in pairs at low to middle levels in brushy flower banks or other cover; not usually with mixed-species feeding flocks. Sexes look alike and can appear rather drab unless the beautiful head pattern is seen: broad golden-yellow eyebrow set off by dark rusty cheeks and cap.

Sjöstedt's Greenbul
Baeopogon clamans
A unusual dark greenbul often found near water in the forest interior. Decorated in various shades of dark and olive green, with a gray throat that contrasts with the breast, a buffy belly, and bright white sides of the tail. Can be confused with both Honeyguide Greenbul and actual honeyguides, but the flight is direct rather than undulating, the throat contrasts with the breast, the eyes are always dark, and the vocalizations are distinctive. Can be located by its “REHR!” calls, often followed by a series of fast, scratchy notes and sometimes repeated for minutes on end.

Lettered Aracari
Pteroglossus inscriptus
Small toucan found across southern Amazonia. Unlikely to be confused in range. Essentially dark above with entirely yellow underparts; note the bare blue skin above the eye. Named for the squiggly dark markings on the bill. Typically found in pairs or small groups in the canopy of lowland forest and edges, up into the foothills of the Andes. Often seen perched conspicuously on a snag, or foraging in a fruiting tree.

Vulturine Parrot
Pyrilia vulturina
Medium-sized, largely green parrot with a striking head pattern. The head is featherless with a combination of orange, black, and yellow bristles. Note the orange shoulder and, in flight, the red underwings. Found in the canopy of humid forest. Call is a distinctive nasal series of “tree ... trayaweet” notes.
