White-browed Triller

Luminous, short-tailed parrot with a cherry-red throat and breast, green upperparts, and finely hooked orange bill. Also note the spiky feathers making up the green-and-blue crown. Endemic to the Polynesian Cook Islands, where it is native to Rimatara and introduced (or reintroduced) to others, including Atiu, where it occurred historically. Forages in a variety of wooded island habitats, including coconut plantations. Gives a variety of high-pitched calls, including a gratingly shrill and garbled screech.

An uncommon and dull nuthatch of open primary pine forests. Distinctive in its plainness, lacking any bright coloration; gray-backed and white-bellied, with a black line running from the eye to the shoulder. Does not have any warm colors under the vent, unlike Chestnut-vented and Eurasian Nuthatches.

Large brown seedeater with two pale wingbars and a big, bulging bill. Varies geographically in the amount of streaking on the crown and underparts and the presence or absence of a pale forehead patch. Found in montane habitats including forest, forest edge, bamboo, and scrub. Generally inconspicuous, but will perch up to sing. The call is a high, thin “tsreep-tseet,” and the song is a complex and exuberant jumble of whistled and rattling notes. Somewhat similar to Streaky Seedeater, but larger and heavier-billed, with a much darker and less patterned head.
