Turquoise Dacnis
Dacnis hartlaubi
A small tanager that is rare and local in the Andes of Colombia. Beautiful male is patterned in electric cerulean and black with an especially prominent black mask and a staring yellow eye. Female is grayish brown above and dull buffy below with a darker mask and a yellowish eye. Note its rather stout bill for a dacnis. Pairs occur in montane forest and edges from around 1,300 to 2,200 m, where they follow mixed-species flocks or feed from fruiting trees.

Mottled Swift
Tachymarptis aequatorialis
Huge swift with powerful, falcon-like flight. Overall coloration is gray with a paler throat and mottling on the belly, but often looks blackish when seen in flight overhead. A darker, blackish population nests in Luanda, Angola, and wanders widely. Found over a wide variety of habitats, though often in the vicinity of rock outcroppings. Near breeding colonies, gives an exuberant trilled call. Similar in size and shape to Alpine Swift, but separated by the dark rather than white belly. Separated from all other swifts by large size.

Yellow-browed Tit
Sylviparus modestus
Plain yellowish bird with a weak crest and pale brow; doesn’t look like any other tit. Darker above than below, but largely lacks eye-catching physical features. Often joins mixed-species flocks in small groups. Inhabits montane evergreen forests, where it sticks to the middle and upper levels of the vegetation. Calls are high and thin with a lisping quality; song is a series of one constantly repeated note.

Black-necklaced Scimitar-Babbler
Erythrogenys erythrocnemis
Medium-sized, strikingly patterned songbird endemic to Taiwan, where less common than Taiwan Scimitar-Babbler. Brown above, white below, with rich olive-brown flanks, rusty undertail coverts, and black “necklace” of blobby black streaks. Inhabits foothill and montane forests, where it skulks in undergrowth and shrubby edge. Pairs duet, giving bouncy-sounding hoots; alarm calls harsh and grating.
