Ochre-breasted Antpitta

The red head of the breeding male is distinctive. Non-breeding male and female are nondescript streaky brown birds with buffy eyebrows. Found in moist, grassy habitats, where it often appears after recent rain. Most records are of territorial breeding males. Becomes inconspicuous when not breeding, mixing with flocks of other weavers and seedeaters. The call is a rough “chyet” and the song is an accelerating series of annoyed-sounding notes. Breeding male very similar to breeding male Red-headed Quelea, but has less red on the nape and more on the breast, for a more cleanly “hooded” look.

A fairly large honeyeater of mid-montane forest and edge. Black body with olive wing feathers, boldly patterned with white scales on the back, flanks and dappled white on the chest. Large pale blue area of bare facial skin mainly behind the eye and a red wattle on the side of the throat. Co-occurs with Ornate and Cinnamon-browed Melidectes, but Vogelkop has a distinctive facial pattern with pale bill and white lines extending above and below to form a crescent shape. Calls include, loud downward whistles or parrotlike squawking.

Large black crow endemic to the western Philippines, from Mindoro west to Palawan. Plumage has an iridescent dark blue sheen when seen up close. Note relatively long, slightly decurved bill. Favors intact forest and forest edge. Often encountered as pairs or small flocks in rowing flight over roads, rivers, and clearings. Gives loud nasal caws.
