Unstreaked Tit-Tyrant

A rather plain thornbird with a long tail and a dark gray eye. Nondescript; look for the cinnamon-tinged forehead and slightly warmer brown flanks and tail. Found in open areas with scattered trees and savannas; avoids the forest interior. Tends to be very vocal, often singing a squeaky, chattering duet. Look for its enormous stick nests usually located in isolated trees where they hang suspended at the end of branches. Occurs in northern Venezuela and Colombia.

Well-named, the common roadside hawk in tropical lowlands of East Mexico and Central and South America. Often seen on wires, phone poles, posts out in fields. Adult has staring pale eyes, streaked breast contrasting with barred belly. Immature streaked below, much like many other immature hawks, but its tail has broad and fairly even bands. Flies with rather quick, stiff wingbeats, recalling a Red-shouldered Hawk or an Accipiter; noisy flight display mainly in late winter-spring.

Dark thrush with orange bill, eyering, legs, and feet. Found on various remote islands in the southern Solomons, as well as northern Vanuatu and (formerly) the Maré off New Caledonia. Some variation in plumage between islands, but no similar species present. Forages at all levels of forest, including on the forest floor. Calls include harsh chupping calls, often given in bursts.
