Peruvian Plantcutter

Like most other members of its genus, this songbird can be excruciatingly difficult to see in the dense forest edge growth or wetlands it prefers. Brown with a pale supercilium and belly, faint streaking on the crown and back, and a rufous burnish to the rump and upper tail. Very similar to Pleske's and Gray's Grasshopper-Warblers but has a more contrasting brow and belly than those two and is substantially smaller than the latter. Song is dry and rattling, comprised of a series of double notes followed by longer, more mellow-sounding ones. Calls are similarly dry and short.

A large-eyed and immaculately camouflaged nocturnal bird. Plumage is a mixture of brown, rufous, and gray speckling and barring, with a small white throat patch and a faint rufous collar. Found mostly in and around forest. Recorded roosting on sandy beaches and mangrove roots. Superficially similar to Solomons Frogmouth but unlikely to be confused. Song reported to sound similar to an axe hitting wood, a staccato “tok-tok-tok.”

Small, striking gray and white raptor with black shoulder patches. Underparts white with two black patches on underwing, extending from "wrist" to wingtips. Legs and feet yellow. Eyes are bright red, and dark markings behind the eye end in a sharp point. Hovers over grasslands searching for prey. Perches on exposed branches and dead trees. Common in agricultural areas and around the edges of towns.
