Torresian Kingfisher

A medium-sized vulture with a silvery bill, a dark body, a grayish shine on the wings, a white back, and a distinctive white collar on the neck. In flight, the adult appears dark with a strikingly large white slab running across the underside of the wing. The juvenile is dark brown with fine pale streaks; it has a dark collar, pale feathers on the head, a dark bill, and no white on the back or underwing. Found in open areas and around habitation.

A medium-sized bird of foothill and lower montane forest. Uniform slaty gray with a black edge to the wing and black tail tip. Male has a black face and female a gray head. Similar to other male cicadabirds, but male Papuan has a darker wing than Gray-headed, and not found in open habitats like Common. Also similar to female Boyer’s Cuckooshrike but female Papuan Cicadabird has a longer, more slender bill. Voice, a short, repeated, upslurred “chuit!”.

Small, handsome tanager with piercing yellow eyes. Males are mostly cobalt-blue with a white belly and a black mask. Note the black feathers on the back and the blue-edged wings. Females are greenish-olive. Rare; found in the canopy and edges of humid forest on poor-quality soils, where it forages acrobatically and sometimes accompanies mixed-species tanager flocks. The similar male of the more common Black-faced Dacnis has darker blue plumage and a black mask that extends to the nape, while females are browner above and paler below.
